NLG Sends 11 Member Delegation of Attorneys, Law Professors, Legal Workers and Law Students to Observe Genocide Trial in Guatemala

Bruce Nestor is an immigration and criminal defense attorney. His practice also focuses on representing political dissidents and challenging State repression of political activists. Bruce was President of the National Lawyers Guild from 2000-2003.

Carrie Anne Comer is an anthropologist and human rights advocate who works on transitional justice issues in Guatemala and Honduras. She is currently pursuing a degree in International Human Rights Law at the University of Oxford, though she plans to return to Central America upon graduation.

Carrie Anne Comer es antropóloga y defensora de los derechos humanos. Durante los últimos años, ha trabajado en Guatemala y Honduras en materia de la justicia de transición. Actualmente cursa una maestría en Derecho Internacional de los Derechos Humanos en la Universidad de Oxford en Inglaterra, aunque regresará a Centroamérica al terminar sus estudios.

Christina Iturralde is an attorney at the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Immigrant Justice project in Atlanta, Georgia, EEUU which promotes the civil and human rights of immigrants in the US, often challenging policies and practices of local and federal government agencies.  She is a member of the American Bar Association’s Immigration Advisory Committee.

Christina Iturralde es abogada del Proyecto de Justicia Inmigrante en el Southern Poverty Law Center con sede en Atlanta, Georgia promoviendo los derechos civiles y humanos de los inmigrantes dentro de los EEUU, desafiando políticas y prácticas de agencias gubernamentales. Actualmente es miembro de la Comisión de Inmigración del American Bar Association.

Clayton Cheney is an attorney Graduate Fellow at Santa Clara University Law School’s International Human Rights Clinic in California, USA. Mr. Cheney observed trials at the International Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and is dedicated to public international and human rights law.

Clayton Cheney es abogado y realiza un trabajo con el programa de  Derechos Humanos Internacionales de la Escuela de Derecho de la Universidad de Santa Clara en California, EEUU.  Fue observador en el Tribunal Internacional para le Antigua Yugoslavia.

Emily Yozell has worked from Central America for over 25 years, specializing in international human rights and environmental law. Previously, she practiced criminal defense and immigration law in the US. Attorney Yozell has collaborated with numerous non-governmental human rights organizations throughout the Americas, including Guatemala during the 1980’s and 90’s.

Emily Yozell es abogada radicada en Costa Rica desde 1988 y ha trabajado en la región centroamericana por mas de 25 años promoviendo DDHH y empoderando comunidades a exigir sus derechos.  Se especializa en el sistema interamericana de DDHH y el derecho internacional ambiental. Ha trabajado con varios ong’s de DDHH dentro y fuera de Guatemala.

Kendra Wergin is a law student focusing on international criminal law at the University of Virginia School of Law. She previously interned on the Ratko Mladić prosecution team at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and wrote her thesis analyzing the genocide jurisprudence of the ICTY.

Kendra Wergin es estudiante de derecho penal internacional en la Universidad de Virginia. Ella trabajó como asistente en la prosecución de Ratko Mladić en el Tribunal Penal Internacional para la ex-Yugoslavia y acaba de escribir una tesis analizando la jurisprudencia del Genocidio del dicho tribunal internacional.

Kristin Donovan is a community outreach worker and paralegal with the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Immigrant Justice Project based in Atlanta, Georgia. Ms. Donovan works to defend and promote the civil and employment rights of immigrants in the United States. Prior, she worked as an international human rights observer in Colombia with Peace Brigades International

Kristin Donovan trabaja con el Proyecto de Justicia Inmigrante del Southern Poverty Law Center, promoviendo los derechos civiles y laborales de inmigrantes en los Estados Unidos. Anteriormente, Sra. Donovan trabajó como observadora internacional de derechos humanos en Colombia con las Brigadas Internacionales por la Paz.

Lauren Carasik is a lawyer and the Director of the Human Rights Clinic at Western New England University School of Law in Massachusetts. The clinic has worked on human rights projects in Guatemala and Honduras and hopes to continue working in these areas.

Lauren Carasik es abogada y directora de la Clínica de Derechos Humanos en la Universidad de Western New England, Escuela de Derecho ubicado en Massachusetts, EEUU. Su Clínica ha trabajado en proyectos de investigación y denuncia por violaciones de derechos humanos en Guatemala y Honduras y ella viene a complementar dichos labores.

Mariah Thompson is a student of international human rights law at the University of Virginia School of Law in the United States.  Ms. Thompson clerked at the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia in the Office of the Prosecutor.  She intends to pursue a career in human rights litigation following graduation.

Mariah Thompson es estudiante de derechos humanos internacionales en la Universidad de Virginia, EE.UU. En 2012, la señora Thompson trabajó con el Fiscal en el Tribunal Penal Internacional por la ex-Yugoslavia.  Espera litigar en casos de violaciones de derechos humanos al concluir sus estudios.

Nanette Kripke is an expert in criminal defense and works at the Legal Aid Society in New York City (Brooklyn).  Attorney Kripke has participated in previous international delegations to Mexico, to Chiapas in 2005 and to Guerrero in 2008.

Nanette Kripke es abogada especialista en defensa penal y actualmente desempeña  sus labores defendiendo a personas indigentes por la Municipalidad de Nueva York.  Ha participado en dos delegaciones legales internacionales, a Chiapas en 2005 y a Guerrero en 2008.

Susana De Leon is an immigration attorney and community activist, defending immigrants, women and children who have suffered crimes and domestic abuse.  She emigrated from Mexico to the US in 1985 and presently chairs the board of the NLG National Immigration Project. She has also taught at the University of Minnesota.

Susana De Leon emigró a los EEUU en 1985.  Se especializa en los derechos de inmigrantes y de mujeres y niños víctimas de crímenes o violencia domestica. Ella es activista comunal y Presidenta de la directiva del Proyecto Nacional de Inmigración del Gremio Nacional de Abogados (NLG). Fue profesora en la Universidad de Minnesota.
